The Sunday Quiz — October 2, 2016

It is Star Trek. Thriftily, scenes from “The Cage” were reused for the first season two-part episode “The Menagerie.” Mr. Spock does a lot of smiling, since in this iteration he is half-Martian, and the purely logical Vulcans had yet to be invented.

It is The Pretender. In the pilot, recently-escaped sheltered genius Jarod (Michael T. Weiss) — who can be anyone he wants to be — also discovers Wheel of Fortune.

It was “The Train Job” — which should have come directly after the pilot. “Serenity, Part 1” and “Part 2” were left to be broadcast as Episodes 10 and 11 respectively. Totally makes sense!

You didn’t want to have met these characters already or anything, did you?

It’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. The original pilot was later aired as “The Lost Episode.” But Zordon, Zords and Power Morphers just sound right, you know? Plus, how creepy is Zoltar?

It’s Lost. The Lost pilot cost something in the neighborhood of US$14 million — the network exec who approved it was fired, before the show even aired.

It is Ursula, from 1989’s The Little Mermaid, she is voiced by the Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Pat Carroll.

It is Iago, as voiced by Gilbert Gottfried in Aladdin (1992). The Quote: “Oh, there’s a big surprise! That’s an incredi–I think I’m gonna have a heart attack and die from that surprise.”

It is Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, of course, from the 1950 film. She is played by Cate Blanchett in the 2015 live action version. The Quote: “Above all, self-control.”

It is Chernabog, the menacing demon from Fantasia (1940) — later seen in Once Upon a Time:

It is Ratigan, from The Great Mouse Detective (1986). The Quote: “Oh, I love it when I’m nasty!”

It is Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Faith, inside Buffy’s body in “Who Are You?” (S04E16). The full quote, as she is talking to Spike:

SPIKE: You know why I really hate you, Summers?
FAITH [IN BUFFY]: ‘Cause I’m a stuck-up tight-ass with no sense of fun?
SPIKE: Well, yeah, that covers a lot of it.

It is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is Spike, from “Dirty Girls” (S07E18), when Faith arrives in Sunnydale and first meets Spike…

BUFFY: He’s with me. He has a soul.
FAITH: Oh, he’s like Angel?
SPIKE: No!
BUFFY: Sort of.
SPIKE: I am nothing like Angel!
BUFFY: He fights on my side. Which is more than I can say for some of us.
SPIKE: [annoyed] Angel’s dull as a table lamp! And we have very different coloring.

It is Angel — this is Angel himself, having an epiphany in “Epiphany” (S03E16).

It is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is Olaf (Abraham Benrubi), from the episode “Triangle” (S05E11), in which Anya’s ex appears in Sunnydale, and is a troll.

It is Angel — this is Cordelia, consoling Angel after Buffy’s death in “Heartthrob” (S03E01).
